Job Summary:
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides essential support to adults with disabilities, ensuring a safe, supportive, and respectful environment. The DSP works closely with individuals to promote independence, assist with daily activities, and support their emotional and physical well-being. This role requires the ability to manage stressful situations, calmly de-escalate challenging behaviors, and assist with a variety of personal care, housekeeping, and charting duties.
Key Responsibilities:
Personal Care and Assistance: Provide support with daily living tasks, including hygiene, meal preparation, dressing, mobility assistance, and other personal care activities as needed.
Behavioral Support: Work with individuals to manage stress, calm down patients in emotional distress, and implement behavior management strategies as directed by the treatment plan.
Charting and Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely records of patient activities, behaviors, and any incidents. Document care provided, medication administration (Med Pass), and other relevant observations in accordance with organizational and regulatory guidelines.
Medication Administration: Assist with administering medications as per prescribed instructions, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with medical protocols.
Housekeeping and Cleaning: Perform light housekeeping duties, such as cleaning common areas, ensuring a clean, safe, and pleasant living environment for residents.
Client Engagement: Foster positive relationships with clients, ensuring they feel valued, respected, and supported. Encourage and promote independence and participation in daily activities.
Collaboration: Work as part of a team, collaborating with other professionals, including nurses, therapists, and family members, to ensure the well-being and care of individuals.
Crisis Management: Respond appropriately in emergency situations and work to de-escalate stressful or challenging behaviors, providing support to individuals in maintaining emotional regulation.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (additional certifications in relevant fields preferred).
Prior experience working with adults with disabilities, especially in a residential or healthcare setting, is highly desirable.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with clients, team members, and families.
Ability to handle stressful situations with calmness, patience, and professionalism.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to lift and assist clients as necessary and perform light housekeeping duties.
Certification in CPR and First Aid, or the ability to obtain upon hire.
Knowledge of basic medication administration and charting.
Working Conditions:
This position may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on client needs.
Must be able to work in a variety of settings including residential homes, group homes, or other care facilities.
The role involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, and lifting.
Ability to manage emotional and behavioral crises, using de-escalation techniques and maintaining a supportive and calming presence.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with medication management or certified in medication administration.
Knowledge of mental health, behavioral disorders, or intellectual disabilities.
Familiarity with behavior support plans and the ability to follow protocols to de-escalate situations.
