I have a really nice black dishware set that comes With 4 Square plates and 4 Smaller square dessert plates, and only 2 bowls. This is a very nice starter set. There are some chips in the plates on the corners, but no cracks and nothing that would keep you from using them just have too many and trying to downsize.
